I think this is the best book I’ve read since “A Man Called Ove”. I listened to the audiobook; I loved Ireland as the background, but the man who read the story was absolutely brilliant. It’s cliche, but you’ll laugh, you’ll cry... and you won’t regret it.

Absolutely stunning.

4.25 stars, so wholesome ♥️

Such a touching, very Irish look back at a man's long life, and the people that made it. The narrative voice and organization devices of toasts, and missive to son was so authentic. Brava.

Unrealistic voice, a too constructed narrative and unbelievable.
Read “A man called Ove” instead.

No time for the plot machinations, such as they are, which seem a distraction from the psychological side of the story. But that too relies altogether too heavily on a store of archetypes, Irish masculinity first and foremost. Griffin has a good understanding of this, and a not inconsiderable ability to dive into its contradictions and unpack the implications, but everything's so utterly overwrought it's hard not to feel the effect's spoiled for fear we might not quite get it.

I love the concept of this book. Set in Ireland and told in essentially 5 parts each focusing on Maurice Hannigan’s relationship with whomever he is toasting. There are interwoven stories that are pieced together throughout all of the different stories as you get to know more and more about Hannigan, a grumpy but also soft old man. There’s humor, heart and some drama in the story. I definitely enjoyed this book from start to finish. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Ove, I think this is one to read if you love cranky old men and wonderful storytelling.

I wish I could refrain from books until the New Year because nothing can top this one.
