When All is Said

Wow

Maurice Hannigan installs himself on a stool at the bar of the local hotel and takes stock of his 84 years. Like all of us, he has regrets but he also recognises the gifts he has had along the way. While taking in the bustle of the evening, he makes five toasts to the five dearest people in his life - four of whom have passed on. He recounts their memories and magically links their stories to one gold coin, found decades earlier, which has inadvertently swayed his course and put a vein of revenge and regret throughout his long life.
Maurice reveals deep compassion and unthinkable heart-break when discussing Tony, Molly and Noreen and it is easy to see that 'still waters run deep' in this Irish cattle farmer.
I listened to this audiobook and was floored by Niall Buggy's narration. This was not a mere reading of a novel but a full blown performance by an extremely talented actor. When scenes of regret or heart-ache were read, I was truly brought to tears (a rarity for me) because Niall was sniffling as he read. It was a gorgeous experience which I highly recommend.

Sad, and very sweet.

Audiobook is so well-done! I could not stop listening to it. Reminiscent of “A Man Called Ove.” Cried and laughed through it. Beautiful story and writing. Hard to believe it is her debut novel. Looking forward to more from her.

I was a solid 4 star nearly throughout, but then I got so wrapped up and attached, I couldn’t put it down. I went from “funny” to “charming” to “heartwarming” to ugly crying. I couldn’t wait to see where this one was going, and then I didn’t want it to end. I have to say that being Irish descent, I got a lot of the humor and rhythm of the book. I think that was clutch. I bet this would be awesome on audiobook!

Well...that was the second saddest thing I've ever feckin read, but worth it to the last drop!

This was amazing. The story and characters have lived with me ever since. I loved how something as simple as a coin could wreak such havoc on the lives of many generations.

This novel is perfectly Irish in the way that even the joyful moments have a sense of sadness and grief to them.

4.5 stars

I’d give this one six stars if I could. Beautiful, heartbreaking, and life-affirming. This is what it feels like to be human. Storytelling at its absolute best.
