I love the way this blends military action and building friendships and camaraderie
I really liked the characters and the story. The only thing mildly distracting was it had a lot of military insider jokes/banter. As a non-military person, I felt I would have enjoyed the story even more if I hadn't felt like I missed some of the humor.
Listened to this audiobook after seeing it recommended in a thread about books with super-competent female protagonists. It was a fun listen and self-contained enough even though it's part of a series. I don't usually go for military sci-fi, so this was a nice change. A good fit for anyone who wants a classic sci-fi feel with an irreverent tone and a non-frustrating main character.
This book is a bit of a slow burn, but not in the romantic sense. Took me a while to be in invested, but the time spent was worth it in the end.
Huff does a great job of humanizing otherwise sexually objectified aliens. Also, I LOVE the satire on adolescent males. Dangerous, indeed.
I’d comment on the depiction of military soldiers, but I have no experience with that. I’m interested in hearing thoughts from those that do, however.

Delightful military sci-fi with just enough political intrigue and excellent character building.
I chose this book to read because I was looking for speculative fiction books written by women, with female (preferably non-white) lead characters. The author's talent is clear - the characters are sharply drawn, the way they play off one another is both fun and poignant in turns, the plot is solid and the action satisfying. I didn't pay attention to the reviews before reading it, so I didn't realize how 100% military it is. The premise, that the human race along with a couple of others, was invited into a Confederation of aliens who have moved beyond war because they are being threatened by The Others, another war-like race, makes sense, but I still find myself much more interested in the races that are backdrops in this book. I was personally more interested in an investigation of their cultures than a novel about being tested in battle. But that is a personal preference, and no criticism of the author's skill. Plus, it would make a great scifi action film, so I hope some Hollywood studio finds the series and approaches the writer to do so!
Three and a half stars. Fun military sci-fi written by a woman who’s been in the service and it shows.
Enjoyable story, with a bit of a slow start to introduce the member species of the Confederation, which picks up rapidly halfway in. Staff sergeant Torin Kerr is smart, and really, really good at managing her officers and keeping her squad of marines busy and focused. What starts as a diplomatic mission to bring in a new species, the Silsviss, to the Confederation, becomes an attempt to protect a bunch of diplomats from a frightening and increasingly desperate situation.
Likes: 1) The marines had several combat engagements under their belts, and had the cynicism and competence to show for it. Their dialogue and attitudes were frequently funny and felt real, and they were a surprisingly diverse bunch. 2) Watching Torin at work teaching her superior officers how to command her squad was fascinating. 3) Also, Torin's combat experience and quick thinking were on good display as she managed injured and frightened diplomats while determining how best to save their lives from a very determined and dangerous force.
Not really a dislike: The ending chapter felt really abrupt, but I aim to follow Torin's exploits to book 2 to find out what happens next as the Confederation grows and continues its fight against the Others.

Really enjoyed the beginning of the book, felt it was reminiscent of Rachel Bach's Fortune's Pawn, but I like Tobin, saw the twist for what it was and was a little upset by the decisions of those outside the scope of the book (characters not being focused on).
