I think I will have to re-read this to get more out of it. But it is good to have read it once for the overview.

As a modern reader, I was most engaged with this text when it gave general analysis of human nature or behavior. To truly enjoy this book, I think one would have to be a student of martial arts.

I think this is an interesting work of historical writing. It gives a glimpse into the mind of a great martial arts master and his thoughts on the military landscape of the time. However, I do think his vision was shortsighted at times. He makes many claims about the superiority of the Two Sword style, even in contrast with firearms. Clearly, the author could not have predicted the advancements in military technology that make his style obsolete. I do not fault him for this, but it does make the text stand as a historical relic rather than a contemporary guide to military strategy.

Reading between the lines, one can find trinkets of wisdom that could be applied to other walks of life than the one specifically advocated by Miyamoto Musashi. However, its briefness forces one to revisit the tenets inside. The first two rings - earth and water - seemed to contain the best advices. A reading of this book mixed with Sunzi's Art of War 孙子兵法 should provide serious readers with enough strategic leadership skills to confront a great many of challenges, provided they reflect enough upon the applicability to their life.
