"You must sufficiently study this"..."You must consider this deeply"..."You must study this deeply"..."It is impossible to write about this in detail"..." I felt I was reading these phrases over and over and over again at the end of every paragraph.

I open this book with an open mind, expecting truisms and a bit of philosophy. Instead I get some sort of primer on Kendo and longswords. Okay, whatever, I'm an amateur boxer so maybe I can extrapolate a little bit. Eh.. not so much. It's just way too specific to sword fighting save the few portions (meager) that talk about eye contact or what have you.

A good book for skimming.

Ok so why did I read this? I’m really interested in martial arts but I honestly wouldn’t recommend this. This guy is amazing at cutting down people and all but he just decided to write a book one day (literally in one day) and threw up everything he wanted to say to his disciples, making it a bit repetitive and messy.
Overall though, fucking love old japan. You must investigate this thoroughly.

I got quite a bit out of the Book of Earth, and the Book of No-thing said a lot to me as well. The other three books were mostly about actually becoming a warrior, I am not interested in being prepared to kill - not in my nature. I did enjoy the reading however.

And in the Book of Nothing he mentions something that is paramount in my religion -- although he says it differently -- if you cannot find it within, you will never find it without -- always good advice.

Such an interesting read! Unlike Sun Tzu's Art of War, this is an old strategy book with actually useful advice and inspiring points of view in life. Maybe I'm biased for liking Vagabond and Samurai stories so much, but I would recommend this to anyone looking for a light read of japanese philosophy.
