Such an interesting read! Unlike Sun Tzu's Art of War, this is an old strategy book with actually useful advice and inspiring points of view in life. Maybe I'm biased for liking Vagabond and Samurai stories so much, but I would recommend this to anyone looking for a light read of japanese philosophy.

142/365 A lot of great quotes and insights. A short read, but definitely one you can read over and over again, and continue to pick up new things.

A clear representation of the way a master of martial arts thinks both in terms of large scale ideas and specific techniques.
As a martial arts instructor myself, I find simple statements of this book often hold deep and profound insights on life and combat.
For example:
"Even when still, your mind is not still; even when hurried, your mind is not hurried" (Water Scroll 25).
This simple sentence gives you a glimpse into the mindset of an experienced combatant. The slight dissociation of a fighters mindset in action is a hard feeling to conceptualize for non martial artists. I think this statement is the best way to introduce someone into the control of mind martial artists must achieve regularly.

Very interesting to read, having some Kendo background (which definitely evolved out of styles such as the one described in this book).
There were some good laughs to be had at the translation, such as the fact that every paragraph ends with some form of "this requires careful study."
"Punch your enemy hard in the face. You must study this carefully."
