He had been to touch the great death, and found that, after all, it was but the great death. He was man.

I don't know that I've read another book like this. It all took place in one or two days, basically one battle, and was primarily the internal struggle of Henry Fleming, the main character. He first runs, then justifies it, then is ashamed, then rejoins his regiment and finds his courage. The movings of the battle were not something I could read a lot of at a time, so I read just a few chapters in between other books.

i really could not get into this book. the style of writing i found so difficult to connect with. I lost track of the story within the sentences. perhaps also the theme was not interesting to me. I wanted to try to connect with this different view point and to read it to understand the time which it was written in but I just could not follow it enough. perhaps another time i will be able to read it.

Not my favorite. I will never teach this again...if I can help it.
