Ben Macintyre 's latest book and as always a griping read.
On the last day of April in 1980, 6 young man entered the Iranian embassy in London and took over the building and took 26 people hostage. The gunmen were demanding sovereignty for Khuzestan, the release of 9 prisoners in that Iranian province and safe passage out of the United Kingdom.
Macintyre tells a riveting story but also gives an extensive history of the SAS, a special branch of the army trained for such situations. The operation brought the SAS to the public eye for the first time and the take-back of the Embassy was broadcast live, on a bank holiday, resulting in the entire country watching it unfold.
A great read and recommend for all who love history, suspense and great story telling.

The tension built over the first 200 pages of this book pays off in spades with the breathless finale - 'eleven minutes' - which has to be the greatest achievement of non-fiction writing I have read.
Ben Macintyre has mastered the art of telling human stories, and this is one of the best. Perfection.

This was incredibly interesting. I had never heard of this situation, and I was riveted to book the whole time I read it. The pacing was really well done. The people involved were so well written. A really good book.

Ben Macintyre is a master storyteller. This is the fourth book of his that I have enjoyed. The Iranian embassy siege was not something I knew anything about before reading this. I credit Mr. Macintyre’s engaging style for immersing me immediately.
All of his books read like novels all the while providing detailed factual information. At this point, I will read anything he writes.
