This book was darkly delectable. From the feverish sickness, to the dark and gothic castles, every moment of this book was a dark fantasy romance dream.

Elspeth Spindle lives with her middle class Aunt and Uncle after her sickness when she was nine. Every person who has caught this fever has either died, or survived to be afflicted with magic and then put to death by the King. Elspeth's father sent her to live with her Aunt and Uncle hoping that no one would notice her illness or recovery. Plus, her wicked step mother was unlikely to keep her survival from the illness a sickness.

The Providence Cards are highly sought after magically powerful artifacts, which each after different magical abilities that the holder can use at will. Since her illness, Elspeth has hidden her magical abilities from all including her family; however, she is able to see a magical glow from each Providence Card she's ever seen.

The Equinox party is held once a year at the King's castle, and Elspeth and her family are invited and expected to go whether they want to or not. It is at said party that one of the King's nephews, Ravyn Yew, takes Elspeth aside and starts unravelling all of her secrets. She quickly learns that Ravyn is more than he appears and may even be a traitor to the crown.

This book was all that I was hoping for in a dark gothic romance, and I can't wait to see what happens in Elspeth and Ravyn in the next and final book in the duology.

Interesting enough story for me to read the sequel, but LOTS of repetitive phrases and the rhyming was just not good. Reading this was kind of like having a low-calorie snack, it does something for you but just not quite enough
