What a fun story. A passenger has sunk its teeth into Elspeth and it’s not letting go. I loved the lore that built throughout this book. I read a lot in this genre, and this is the first time I’ve seen a magic system or possession handled quite like this. The FMC and the monster have an agreement, and while it’s uncomfortable for her at times, it doesn’t feel like a typical possession there is a balance, a give and take, a protector.

There is some romance here, but the story stays tightly focused on the plot, and the characters are genuinely lovable. All in all, a great read.

for the life of me I cannot understand how someone can read this and think it's a great book. it could have been, though, had she given more thought to world building, magic description, character depth.
