One review for both books:
Damn, this was so good. It felt like a dark fairytale, which is my perfect aesthetic for a fantasy book. We've got a great gothic world with: Spirit of the Woods for our divine being, twelve magic cards giving the user different powers (with tarot cards aesthetic), thick mist where you can't see the night sky or the neighbouring kingdom, creepy tunes whistled while walking through the woods, and lots of riddles and poetry.
Favourite characters:
1. The Nightmare, definitely.. loved his snarkiness and how he kept calling Ravyn "stupid bird" and his whole journey from start to finish. I thought he'll be just a nice little side character, but I'm glad to be very wrong and I loved every second of his story. His relationship with Elspeth was just perfect, the way they cared for and knew each other, the way he made sure she and the people she loves are safe. A great father-daughter relationship, with him ttrying to fix all his past mistakes.
2. Elm - I do love a tortured soul who learns from the mistakes of others and doesn't allow trauma to corrupt him. I didn't think I would love him, but again - very glad to be wrong. Loved his whole journey and am very happy with how things turned out for him, he deserves his ending.
Favourite quotes:
1. “There once was a girl,” he murmured, “clever and good, who tarried in shadow in the depths of the wood. There also was a King—a shepherd by his crook, who reigned over magic and wrote the old book. The two were together, so the two were the same: “The girl, the King… and the monster they became.”
2. "Ravyn shook his head. Lamb, butterfly. The Shepherd King had described the Spirit of the Wood in The Old Book of Alders as neither kin, foe, nor friend. He might have saved ink and called her what she truly was. A proper asshole.
3. “When the Nightmare turned, his smile was gone. “I, too, have waited.” “To kill the Rowans?” “My aim is vast. There are many truths to unveil in the wood. Circles that began centuries ago will finally loop.” He let out a sigh. “Though I fear, with so many idiots around me, that I must do everything myself.”
4. “He came for the girl... And got the monster instead.”
