Immediate 5-star read. Dope magic system. Gothic mystery energy. People put this in the romantasy shelf, but it’s more fantasy than that. The romance is very much a small side piece. This book twists and turns around dark corners and I loved it all
dark emotional medium-paced

I really enjoyed this story and for most of my read I was thinking solid 4 stars I was entertained, I enjoyed the characters and the plot but it was just missing that 5 star feel. By the end though it had definitely gained a half star, it left you hanging in a way that I'm extremely eager to get to the next book and very glad that I waited to read this so that I could dive straight into the next one. Rachel
Gillig has quickly become a must buy author for me. Really looking forward to seeing how this story ends.

3.9

«“There once was a girl,” he murmured, “clever and good, who tarried in shadow in the depths of the wood. There also was a King—a shepherd by his crook, who reigned over magic and wrote the old book. The two were together, so the two were the same: “The girl, the King… and the monster they became.” »

Well, Elspeth is certanly NOT that girl, then. Elspeth is the opposite of clever, she doesn't have one single clever bone in her body, she hasn't been clever for even a minute in her life, she doesn't know where clever lives, if clever was a food she would be allergic...

Breathtakingly stupid.
On multiple levels! everyone is stupid, the plot moves stupidly from one stupid event to another stupid solution, and everything in between is also written in the most stupid way possible!
It’s so dumb and predictable I could tell what was going to happen at least 50 pages before it happened, and I was playing the sims while listening to the audiobook.

Elspeth the bumbling idiot and her whiny, self centered, childish narration are absolutely the worst part of the book and being in her head makes the book terribly annoying to read.
In the last 20% I actively wanted her dead.
I wished she had actually died at the beginning so she could be replaced with someone that isn't the most empty, irritating, idiotic wet wipe of a character. Anything would have been more interesting and enjoyable than being stuck in the point of view of this pitiful crybaby.

The monster living in her head is a better person than me, he managed to just chill in there for eleven years while I was losing it after 150 pages.

The story. The magic. The infection. The cards. The fighting and choreography. The history. The love interest. The drama. Oh my goodness. Finished it in 2 days. That’s how enthralled I was.

I enjoyed this for the most part. It was a little slow going at the start, and despite the initial intrigue I found the world building a little lacklustre. Also … the placement of the cards was … convenient to say the least. Oh and i thought Ravyn had the personality of wet beige paint. (I think Ione, Elm, and Emory were the most interesting for me)

Overall: A good book, but one that didn’t really end up gripping me. And one I wish I hadn’t heard so much hype about - i think it set the bar too high.
