Elspeth was infected by the fever as a kid and had gained the power to absorb the cards fragments into herself. This leads to the monster called Nightmare living in her. This book was FINE. Far too much usage of similes to describe things. Prose was ok. The romantic relationship felt rushed. Like it was just very average, to me. I felt the card magic system could have been much cooler but it was a cool idea turned very basic.
