The magic system in this book is so unique that I felt very interested in its complexity. I was honestly pretty disappointed with this book when I read it, because I struggled with the main character and I felt that some of the writing felt messy to me. HOWEVER, this book did manage to get me out of a LONNNGG reading slump. I am also writing this after reading the 2nd book and that book was worth it ALL. Get through this book to read the 2nd book because it is everything. All of the problems I had with book 1 were not present in book 2, though I would still describe this book as a very Gothic romantic fantasy.

This book had it all, it was SO good. And really well-paced. No part of the book dragged IMO, the writing style and the plot were both so good that they propelled me onwards. The desire to keep reading was so strong that I would go to bed upset that I was sleepy lolllll

Really fun world building
I like the card concept
The rhyme/poetry is horrible
Esp when she abandons the rhyming from 20% - 95% in the book
Too much obvious foreshadowing
But fun that we are continuing past Elspeth
I hope she doesn't come back in book 2
Like that it leaned into horror at the end
Sex scenes were rubbish
Would be great if book 2 leaned even more into body horror
