I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did because I'm not usually one for vaguely medieval fairytale settings, but it managed to surprise me. I enjoyed the back-and-forth between Elspeth and the (rather sassy) Nightmare inhabiting her body and mind, as well as the focused worldbuilding of the small kingdom of Blunder, enshrouded in mist left by a Spirit of the Wood said to be vengeful and obsessed by the tarot-like Providence Cards created by a long lost king of legend.
This book is another one I read for fantasy book club De Moerasdraak, and though we poked at least fifty holes in the plot during our discussion, it didn't bother me while reading, and I think I still want to read the sequel to this.
