I done the audio book for this and seriously recommend, hearing the Julia read her own wild and unbelievable story really added to the experience

How this woman is still standing Nevermind thriving after everything she experienced in life and especially at a young age is commendable

The beginning is absolutely captivating, but about halfway through the structure begins to fall apart and the narrative gets a bit eye-roll inducing. I agree with the many other reviews that say she completely lacks even an ounce of introspection. She spends a great deal of this book complaining about betrayal, describing characters around her as opportunistic, duplicitous, and insincere - only to turn around and treat people the exact same way or worse. She blames her hardships on everyone else, without reflecting much on her own bad decision making.

She touts herself as an independent girls-girl, when even by her own writing it is clear that she is a not-like-the-others Mean Girl who relies on male attention. Every single female character either “betrays” her and is cast out of her life, or dies. While the men - many of whom literally abuse her - all have redeeming story arcs and are ultimately forgiven. She concludes the book by saying she doesn’t care about male approval anymore, and yet the entire thing is bafflingly dedicated to her deadbeat father (and pointedly, not her mother). Oh the irony.

She so badly wants to be a fixture of New York culture, but the truth is she just is not as relevant or famous as she seems to think she is. Her story culminates in a woe-is-me diatribe about how life is so hard, no one understands her artistry, and she’s being blacklisted despite “single-handedly inspiring every trend of 2022.” Okay sweetie.

Still, although messy, self-aggrandizing, and attention-seeking, she is also clearly a resilient, creative, fiery person, and a gifted writer. Shocker: she contains multitudes. To me her story is a testament to how art can save a life. I surprised myself by picking up this book, knowing almost nothing about her beforehand, but I’m glad I did. What a ride.
