I’m not usually big on memoirs, but this one really touched me. Down the Drain gave me a similar feeling to when I read Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died. Julia Fox paints a vivid picture of what it’s like to grow up under traumatic and tumultuous circumstances. So many parts of her story highlight the effects of trauma on decision-making and the often-blurred line between perpetrator and victim. In many ways, this book emphasizes the gray areas of life, especially when it comes to coping with trauma, mental illness, and addiction. It also acknowledges that healing is not a linear process. People who have experienced trauma often feel an overwhelming urge to heal every inch of themselves from their past, and this book captures that struggle beautifully. It recognizes that real growth isn’t about completely erasing one’s past but rather acknowledging those experiences and fostering a desire not just to survive, but to thrive.

My main critique of the book is that some characters and storylines caught me off guard. At times, I found myself confused about who certain people were or what role they played in her life. While she did attempt to keep things somewhat chronological, the pacing occasionally felt off, which made the story lose some cohesiveness.
