i think i may actually prefer this to scott pilgrim? i mean i'm comparing apples to oranges here, pilgrim is a series and this is one book. it just felt a little more mature to me, like in both cases o'malley is writing about screwups but this novel sort of takes katie down to the absolute brink of where desperation and a desire to avoid mistakes can lead you before it gives her a break and like. i am not 1000% certain how much she learned but the ending makes me hopeful? whereas with scott it sort of felt like he maybe worked out some stuff in the context of his relationship with ramona but not so much overall

idk i'm rambling even though truth be told i barely remember the scott pilgrim ending so i may be misreading it madly. c'est la vie. the point is i enjoyed this! hurray for stories about twenty change screwups, i can relate. 4 stars

Lively and beautifully illustrated tale on the consequences of 'one more do-over'. Highly recommended!

Seconds was a well-written, well-executed, magical realism graphic novel with solid, easy-to-follow graphical story-telling about Katie, a girl who becomes obsessed with trying to make her life perfect, and in doing so only makes it a nightmare. In the end, things are tied up neatly, with Katie learning to accept the things that she cannot change, maintain better relationships, and not be so self-absorbed. As with other Bryan Lee O'Malley works, the main characters are young people suffering from some sort of quarter-life crisis or ennui, but I found Seconds more appealing/less annoying/less whiny than Scott Pilgrim or Lost at Sea, because the "messages" seem to be to make the best of what you have, realize that what you have is probably a considerable amount (especially since O'Malley's work, like John Greene's seems to have great appeal to a certain middle/upper middle hipster crowd), and *not* to dwell on the little mistakes.

YO... THIS WAS SO GOOD HELLO????? I LOVED THIS i need to read more graphic novels oh my god????
