This is a really fun and original story with cool illustrations. I was totally enamored when I first read this but after almost five years, it still holds up pretty well.
I don't know what it was about "Seconds" but I just loved it. I think I loved how you don't exactly love the main character, she has some major flaws (which is apparently O'Malley's speciality - crafting characters I am both frustrated by but identify with too?)
Honestly, I didn't know anything about this book except that it was the new Bryan Lee O'Malley and I loved going into it totally unaware and being surprised by the twists and turns.

Call me biased, but anything from the same author who wrote Scott Pligram would be smashing!!!!!
PLOT
Katie was living her best life. The restaurant where she worked was doing amazing, people loved her, loved her food. She was about to open her own restaurant, a place she always wished to have. But it wasn't enough. After meeting her ex-bpyfriend, she wished things would have been the way she imagined; back with her boyfriend and living her best life. Until one night, a mysterious girl showed up in her room and have her a mashroom and a notebook with these instructions:
1. Write your mistake
2. Ingest one mushroom
3. Go to sleep
4. Wake anew
This is a really clever way to show how things never go as planned. You need to be flexible when the day don't turn the way you want because it never does. There are things that can't be changed, and that doesn't mean we're not in control. having control means bending things the way you have in ways that suits and having a say on how you choose to have your day turning.
guilty side note: i was waiting for Hazel and Katie to end up together..sigh....

This was a huge surprise. :) I wasn't expecting to love it so much. The art was great and cute! :) And the plot was fan-freaking-tastic and had great pacing. The plot was mysterious and intriguing and in the end a recipe for success! :D This story also had a fantastic message which really upped the rating for me. Usually graphic novels are just buckets of fun but this one was buckets of fun with a deeper message underneath, which wasn't too overbearing but which also gave it depth.
Loved! :) Highly recomend! :)

This is officially my first book of 2015!! I got this book for christmas and I have been impatiently waiting for days to finally read this book and I am so grateful that this is my first book for the new year! I love Bryan Lee O'Malley ever since he created Scott Pilgrim and I remember vividly one random day walking through Barnes & Nobles, I encounter that he publish this book and I immediately wanted that book in my possession regardless of not knowing what is the plot of this graphic novel.
There are very few writers that I have encountered in my life so far that I really do not pay attention to what the story is about anymore because I have full faith that they have taken the time and creativity into a book or graphic novel that will surely make me feel in love with and be complete spellbound. I feel when it comes to Seconds that you simply have to read it with a clear and open mind. I will make sure not to give any spoilers.
We are introduce to Katie who has for the last four years live a decrepit apartment which downstairs is the same restaurant that she work as the head chef. One night, she believes she has this dream of a girl on top of her red dresser who tells her when things go awful, don't forget to open the top drawer. Obviously she forgets and ever since she has worked in this place, she has dreamed of opening up her own new restaurant and only has a few steps left until it finally opens to the public. Throughout those four years, a lot of her friends and even the man she loved has come and gone leaving her alone and lonely.
Until one night she sees her ex-boyfriend, Max, in the restaurant and regrets everything that she says and the past and instantly remembers the girl and as she pulls out the drawer, she finds a mushroom, a notebook, and instructions explaining that if you write down your mistake and eat the mushroom you will wake up anew. Sure enough she follows the instructions and her world completely changes the next day. She is completely shocked by this experience and sure enough she keeps using these mushrooms without realizing the dire consequences.
What I love about the book besides the great storyline, was the actual illustrations and the colors. I believe this is my first graphic novel of Bryan that features color and it was absolutely breath taking reading this book and being absorbed into Katie's world. I felt like I was her friend being tagged along in this crazy adventure. Plus I love Max and found him extremely relatable and hot. I loved them from the beginning and I was very pleased with how the ending turned out.
There is so much that I could say about this fabulous graphic novel but I do not want to spoil anyone. I highly recommend it for everyone to read it and plus if you pay attention to the illustrations, there are certain characters from Scott Pilgrim who make an appearance in this graphic novel. I am very proud of Bryan Lee O'Malley for this simple story and yet had all the creative flow that made this book very unique and spectacular.
My favorite message of the story is towards the end that Katie says, "There are things we can't change, and we just have to accept that. And maybe that's some kind of grace". That quote reminded me of the events of my life especially with relationships that had potential but did not happen because of my personal drama, which for years I regretted that it did not happen but in the end I feel there was a purpose why it happen and I realized that I was not ready for relationships and need to deal my dilemmas before dealing with others. Everything has a purpose and you should not regret your decisions of the past because it accomplishes nothing.
I am so lucky to have read this as my first book of 2015 because I believe it sets the tone for the wonderful reading I will hopefully accomplish throughout the year. Until next time...
