Just couldn’t get into it. I was in a slump
(ive thought ab it more and im bumping mu rating down to a 1 star... sorry ned vizzini :()
i really liked it's kind of a funny story but i absolutely hate this.
it's so incredibly misogynistic and sexist that i was so, so, SO sure it was satire. at some points it got to being hurtful for me, a female reader, and i had to put the book down for a couple of minutes. i thought for sure that the squip's horrible, horrible comments were going to be addressed but apparently youre supposed to think that it was evil tech that made him abandon who he really was. when he... didn't?? he didn't even stop being friends with his nerdy friend.
all of the women in this book have no personality and suck. they could be replaced by a sexy lamp and everything would be the same. for some reason, the squip and jeremy's dad keep asking him if he's gay. michel's ""thing"" for asian girls is treated like normal. the squib says "females" and "pheromones" and makes jeremy manipulate girls' feelings so they can have sex and he can gain status. girls call each other skanks. and their theater teacher talks in falsetto????
i like the way it ended. kinda. like, i like the idea. it'd be better, though, if christine were a person and not just a set of boobs.
i gave it two starts because it's there. it exists. it was written down. but that's as far as the merits go.

I was reading it for silent reading time in 6th grade and i felt it wasn’t school appropriate lol
Absolutely awesome. Played out in my head like a 90s teen movie. Didn't like Christine that much and didn't understand why Jeremy did, so for dramatizing girl that really isn't that great, 4 stars.

I totally get some of the negative reviews from people like myself who fell in love with the musical. There's problematic elements for sure, but I am glad that this book exists. The fact that Ned wrote this before the first iPhone shows how forward thinking he was regarding technology. Without this book the musical and subsequent community that grew around it would not exist. RIP Ned and happy closing day BMC
