Be More Chill

Ned Vizzini

DNF at page 100.

Let me preface with, I love It’s Kind of a Funny Story. I had a really hard time dealing with stress and depression when I was in high school. My freshman year, I had a mini mental breakdown around midterms, and a friend of mine gave me the book and told me to read it. It would help. And it did. That book helped me realize other people were going through the same things I was. I’ve bought several copies of that book over the years and given them to people I felt would benefit from the story.

What I’m saying is, I loved Vizzini. That novel means a lot to me. That’s why this is so hard for me to do. I HATED what I read of Be More Chill. All the main character thinks about is getting laid. All he does is masterbate. Everyone is completely vulgar. It’s disgusting. The way women are seen as objects to play with and use in his quest to be more cool is revolting.

I’m angry that this novel came from the same author as one of my all time favorite books.

Vizzini taps into some everpresent high school cliques that I was quick to forget about, and his writing sure hit home on many occasions. Great book, will definitely stay with me.

It wasn't the worst book i've ever read, but it wasn't the best, either. I haven't read it in quite awhile but I remember one specific scene with a nipple piercing that haunts me to this day. I believe Ned is a great writer and one of his other books is in my bookshelf, so I know that his potential isn't limited to this one book. Aside from this, this is the kind of book you'd only be interested in if you like the musical, which i was heavily obessed with when i read it as a kid. It gives more context to the musical, but i can imagine it being a very shocking book for those who don't already know the contents of the Be More Chill universe and how they use a certain level of shock humor in it.

Short but entertaining. I just felt short with the conflict and ending. I wish Vizzini would write a follow up to this!

It was absolutely amazing! I finished and all I had to say was 'Damn'.

Be More Chill Is one of, if not my favorite musical. So, when I heard there was a novel I was excited! The novel is fairly different from the musical, but I’m sure other fans would still enjoy it. I did find the
fetishes
a little weird, like
Jeremy with tails and Micheal fetishizing Asian girls…??
I guess it makes them more realistic, but it’s still weird. I was also a bit surprised by how much
sex, masturbation,
and so on was mentioned. It’s not like BMC has ever been child friendly, though. Overall, it was a pretty good book! Not that similar to the musical, but I still loved the characters.
I wish the novel had more of an ending, like, we got to know what happened to all of the characters
. I’m glad the musical fixes that,  though. I also love how
the SQUIP seemed more like a mentor
here, and
didn’t have any Ill intentions besides doing it’s job. It was a nice twist from the evil SQUIP in the musical.
I It was a nice story, and a pretty good book.

And as a theater kid, the confession scene MADE ME UPSET. CHRISTINE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO BE MAD.

Sigh, the book was just okay. It was kind of gross and it felt like a joke. The way the main character talks and thinks is just disturbing. I liked the story line if it wasn't soooo, you know. And Ned did us so dirty with the ending... Its a permanent cliff hanger. I was embarrassed carrying this around at school, so thats a memory I wont forget. Have you seen the cover?
