Me in 2005: "Fascinating concept and lots of fun, but too many masturbation references for junior high booktalking, alas."

I read this book bc of the musical ( let me say I have only listened to the soundtrack so if some of things I say about the musical are incorrect that’s why) and honestly the musical is better. The book was fine I enjoyed it but I was uncomfortable at the fact they use the r slur quite a few times and gay as an insult. Also they sexualized women more than enough times( although I thought Christine rejecting Jeremy was very empowering and her overall be clear that she wasn’t taking to pushiness) I get that it was 2004 but come on! I just feel as if it just another book about another horny boy, chasing after another basic girl. The reason that it was good was the ending and the rejection along with the dynamic of Jeremy and his suip.

Readers who claim this book, “objectifies women,” should keep in mind it’s written from a perspective of a teenage boy. Not only that, but one who is trying to fit in with the, “cool kids,” for the first time in his life.

Jeremy and his squip keep an entertaining banter throughout the book and the squip itself turns into its own fantastic character.

Ned Vizzini was an incredibly gifted YA author, especially when it came it issues surrounding anxiety and depression. Reading his work makes me sad we won’t get anymore, but thankful for what we have.

It was ok, nothing like the musical, but I liked the squip in this version, I thought that he was oddly human in a way? But pretty okay overall

bro holy shit. I’m glad all the reviews are talking about the musical instead bc the musical takes this weird ass concept with one-dimensional characters and misogynistic themes and NO ending — like actually no ending the book just stops — and it makes into an actual good story. I’m baffled. Anyway stan Joe Iconis I guess what the fuck was this
