I love California and this made me miss it soooooooooooo much. She describes SoCal with so much detail and love, it’s so vivid.

"She was twenty-eight. It was time for her to O.D., not get published."
sometimes you read a book and you're like, wow, it's always been like this hasn't it? sometimes that fills you with dread and sometimes with hope, but I think both happen in equal supportive measures in this book. and I loved it!
THIS is what I want when I'm getting into a "no plot just vibes" book. something with SUBSTANCE please and thank you. eve babitz writes things in a way where it feels like that's the only way to ever describe that sensation or feeling or experience, but it's something I've never read from anyone else or even thought of. words are put together in the most unexpected mosaic-like way and I was eating it up. it was very jarring! for a book that orbits ocean imagery and themes so much, it very much reads in a similarly tide-like, unpredictable, wavy way.
from convos with my friends from LA, I've always felt that it has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, and the last place on earth I'd ever want to be for more than a couple days. and this confirmed that thesis 1000%

eve babitz is the only person who could ever make me want to go to california willingly
This is my first time finishing a Babitz book and I wasn’t a fan of this novel. the protagonist was just annoying and always putting herself in unnecessary and awkward situations. she seemed confused all the time and just bored me. i love the cover of the book though.

this was my spring break beach book. I didn't like when the boys asked if there was a lot of smut, but the pacing was perfect
I kept trying to read it at work and it requires more attention I think. I had a hard time getting fully into it
