Out of the three in this series so far this is most obviously inspired by Wuxia/Xianxia and because of that it really hits the spot -> hence the high rating

This was my least favorite of the novellas so far, but I still liked it a lot. I love Nghi Vo's writing and the characters and the atmosphere she creates with words. I also love the way storytelling is a main theme of the series and how it is implemented into the story. However, this time, rather than having one main story, we get to listen to many short stories or parts of them while traveling with the characters. It was hard to care for those stories, even though I liked the discussions around them. In the end, all threads came together in a vague way. The ending felt very abrupt, too, which didn't feel that satisfying. Still, a fantastic series and I can't wait to read the next novella.

Another banger from Nghi. I was enthralled and intrigued and forced to really pay attention, but I still want to read it again after the dust has settled to gather more little clues and trinkets from the story. I'm also obsessed with the dynamic of older fighters versus younger fighters traveling with their chosen families. It was a very good throughline for the book.
