My most anticipated book of the year after [b:End of Days|18500665|End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3)|Susan Ee|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1423384676s/18500665.jpg|19250719] and it didn't live up to my expectations. For some reason I'm not sad or angry at all.
This was a good book, but the whole time I felt surprisingly detached from the story.
What made me love the first installment was Adelina, who I felt so much for, and the plot that amazed me with its progression and pacing. This... All I can say is meh.

Maybe it's because the plot isn't as captivating or complex as the previous book.
Maybe it's because although the story never bored me, it didn't leave me dying to turn the pages.
Maybe it's because the weak world-building remains - which I could look past in The young elites since I was busy fangirling over it.
Maybe it's because I wasn't ready for the huge indifference I felt to the story, compared to how in love I was with the first book.

I still really appreciated Adelina's character arc and that the author wasn't afraid to kill people off or throw in big twists.
We're also introduced to some new characters with potential (Oh, Magiano... *fans self*).
I look forward to seeing where Marie Lu goes with this series, but I think my expectations were too high to be met with this one.
The truth is, I can't say anything objective about The rose society, because this is a case of ''It's not you, it's me.''

4 zvezde

I tried to persevere. I saw some cool points in the first book that I was holding onto hope for. I know that this was meant to be a morally grey character arc, but it fell flat. It ended up just being 'universe say murder bad, but only when the main character does it' and it continued down that road. There were so many different ways this could have been taken in a much more comprehensive way, but it genuinely just kept getting worse.
