The Doll Factory

The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal is a book about obsession. The book is atmospheric and dark but a very slow read. Unfortunately, I am not the reader for this book. I appreciate the history of the art world and the 1850s London Exhibition. I can even appreciate the Gothic darkness that leads to an almost modern abduction and escape thriller ending. Graphic depictions of violence, however, are just not for me.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

First things first, I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
Now that this is out of the way, let's get to it.
This book was a surprise, I didn't expect it to be so dark.
SPOILER ALERT
Silas is sooo creepy like that stalker game is very strong ....
SPOILER GONE
So this was a very dark and intriguing tale about a young woman, her sister, an artist and a stalker. The main and most interesting part of the story is how the era in which Iris desires to become an artist. I loved how her passion came into play and how while the story was becoming darker and darker, it didn't take all the place in the novel.
I loved the romance and how art was used in the story.
Ultimately I really enjoyed my read and the writing style.
The only things I would like to give warning to is 1. animal cruelty and 2.stalkers ; which could be triggering to some people. (which as I am someone who loved animals and had a stalker was triggering to me)
Great book totally recommend !

Although this book is historical fiction which is definitely my jam, it is much later than the periods I usually like reading about. It also, and this is how you know this book is well written, is a gothic horror story, neither of those things I particularly enjoy. It also has some really graphic animal cruelty which I did not enjoy reading about. Even with these factors I still enjoyed reading it. The characters were interesting, especially Albie and his sister. I also enjoyed the time period and the descriptions were very evocative and lyrical which I really enjoyed.

Had I known this book was essentially a gothic horror I wouldn't have read it but I think I would have missed out. If those genres are your thing and you can get past the animal cruelty, then you will definitely enjoy this book.

This is an atmospheric, dark, gothic, suspenseful historical story set in 1850s London.
The story explores those living in poverty, struggling to survive juxtaposed against artists creating and living their ideals, and centres on a woman living in poverty who is reaching out to live a different life.
It ends up being a thriller towards the end, but don't want to spoil anything there.

I do not often read historical fiction but wow, what a book this is!
I enjoyed all the perspectives from the different characters; Iris, Albie and Silas and the way the story slowly unfolded was perfect in the way it built up the very different lives of each person. Iris and her sister Rose work in a doll shop and Iris is sick of her monotonous life and when she meets Louis Frost, a painter, they strike a deal which involves her becoming a model for him in exchange for painting lessons. Silas is the local taxidermist who may be a lot more dangerous than he seems and Albie is a young boy who often brings dead animals to him for money which he is saving for a full set of teeth. The story is full of intrigue and desire and I felt really attached to Iris and Albie's characters.
There are moments where you will feel the story reaching its pressure point and many more which will make you gasp in shock.
The Gothic aspects of Victorian London add to the peculiarity of the story and it kept me hooked from the very first page. A fantastic book that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end.

Totally gripped by this book. Fabulous characters and visceral descriptions of Victorian London at its worst! You can smell and taste it. This is gothic historical fiction at its finest!

Love the setting and time period, pretty dark but still enjoyable

Beautiful and creepy, definitely a page turner and very enjoyable, down to the last page. Would love to read more from this author.
