Kallum Locke….. lord have mercy. This man is insane and ya know what? I ate up every second of it. He was a little scary but I loved it!! Am I insane for enjoying this? Maybe. I blame the wattpad books I read in middle school for my occasionally depraved taste. TRISHA YOU FED US DARK ROMANCE GIRLIES. The part that really sucked me in…. The plot is so interesting. I’m actually so excited for the second book!! Kallum is insane, obsessed with the FMC, smart and cunning. He was a philosopher professor before he was committed into an insane asylum.. he calls her things like little Halen, his muse and sweetness. THE TWISTS HAD ME BY MY THROAT !! And the ritual scene broke my brain in the best way…. I love love love love Hollow’s row and my insane book boyfriend Professor Locke. He’s not even morally grey, he’s pitch black and I’m down.
But what is art and beauty if not pain? Anything which comes too easily is an insult to both the creator and the consumer.
“I will make you see god for damn sure.”
My fingertips memorize the erratic beat of her pulse as she slips away. Bah-dah-bump. Bah-dah-bah-dah-bump. I want to carve it in my skin.

”Most obsessions start small, harmless. A tiny niggle in the back of your mind, an innocent fixation. The obsessive thought crawls under our skin and we begin to pick and pick until the desire overwhelms and we have no choice but to tear into it, claws raking and drawing blood. The wound is a form of relief. All great minds suffer this affliction. A torment that damns us to a monotonous existence.”
Trisha has done it again! She has become an auto-buy author for me and I can’t wait to see what she gives us next.
Halen St. James is a criminal psychological profiler (think criminal minds). She had been working to catch The Harbinger killer when Kallum Locke crosses her path, locking him up in an insane asylum. Now called to Hollow Row she needs his philosophical expertise to help her solve the disappearance of 33 victims. Will they be able to work together? Or will their past be too much for them to handle?
Do note this book does end on a cliffhanger.
Thank you Trisha and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

so good!! if you’re into true crime/crime dramas i feel like it’s a good pick. it centres around killings that involve occult, ritualistic, satanic shit mixed with some psychology and ancient philosophy concepts. i won’t lie sometimes it got hard to read with the amount of dense philosophy ideas they throw out but in the ending i found it interesting!! i can’t wait for the next book to come out

Ho. Ly. Crap. This book was something else.
Have you ever read something and just KNOWN that the writer was like a bazillion times smarter than you? Because wow. The way Trisha puts words together is next level. The details and thought that went into connecting everything was incredible. I highlighted more passages in this book than I ever have in any other book.
This book was amazing. Twisty and dark and interesting. There is serial killers and secret societies and conspiracy theories and mind control (?) and I still have so. Many. Questions.
I'm gonna need something light and fluffy to read next after that ride! I can't wait for the sequel!

“It's the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil. Those torturously beautiful sins that provoke our deepest, most deviant desires. It feeds us in the dark, stoking a frail flame into an inferno we can no longer resist. She is my flame.
And I am all but pleading for my muse to burn me
alive.”

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book where I had no idea what half the things I was reading meant but I couldn’t stop reading because I was so intrigued by the plot and the characters. I’ve also never felt so dumb while reading. This author has an amazing amount of knowledge about philosophy and although I understood none of it I still kept going.
The authors writing is absolutely beautiful, I felt everything the characters felt. The characters depth was so good, sooooo well written and their behaviors made perfect sense. The MC’s remind me of Lucifer Morningstar and Chloe Decker from the show Lucifer.
I did call the plot twist early on but I don’t think it was super obvious so I was still curious to see if I was right.
This was a lot lighter on the spice than I was expecting (not complaining, just stating) and heavier on the mystery plot. So if you’re looking for a smutty read this isn’t it.
If you’re looking for a read where the MC’s have heavy tension/chemistry and the plot keeps you guessing then read this!

My dark crime-fascinated heart is full and satisfied.
This was a deliciously dark and twisted read, and I loved it.
The twists, the language, and theories - they were enough to make my head spin!
With a crime driven plot that demands attention to detail, and MC's that make you question EVERYTHING, I can't reccomend this enough to anyone who enjoys reading about crime, drama, dark-romance, and above all else the most evil side of humanity.

So this was an NBC Hannibal fan fiction. No cannibalism here, but a similar situation.
Halen is a psychiatrist and detective who becomes involved with a series of murders called the Harbinger Killings.
In the first couple of chapters we see how Halen is instrumental in pleading to the jury that Professor Locke (hot sexy professor) is guilty for these killings, despite the only evidence being circumstantial. Despite that, Locke is given an insanity plea and is institutionalized.
(So this set up had me eating this shit up!!)
6 months later Halen is investigating the disappearance of 30 townspeople when their eyes are discovered on a ritual ground. The circumstances around this scene lead Halen to pleading for the aid of Professor Locke to hunt down the kidnapper/murderer.
Now this is where everything gets fuzzy. There’s a great premise here, but the execution wasn’t ironed out as neatly as a story based in crime and philosophy should have been. In using complex philosophical concepts, there is a responsibility for the author to make it palatable to the audience, and it was neglected. As the story goes on, nothing truly makes sense. The story becomes spotty.
When the plot twist at the end occurs, you aren’t gasping and waiting with baited breath at an explanation, you are just asking yourself “what the fuck does is all mean?!” I promise I have a really great understanding of philosophy and the storytelling isn’t even dense it’s just poorly executed.
I think if we just took a step back and made a couple of edits (especially in the middle and end of the book) this could have easily been a 5 star experience.
