This book was a lovely story of grief and life after loss that was sad but hopeful. I loved the main story of the author and Mabel, and the writing was beautiful and read like prose. I thought the secondary story of White was fine but slowed down the book for me, although I can understand why the author included it.

The book is as much a memoir of grief as it is of hawking.

Stunning. I sobbed through this book even when seemingly unnecessary; it is so beautifully written. A heart-breaking meditation on life, death, companionship, humanity, wildness, and entitlement over nature (with a thoughtful perspective on the life of T.H. White thrown in for good measure). Cannot recommend it highly enough!

Well written, but I really don't see why it won so many awards.

This is a beautifully written, heart wrenching story of the author coming to terms with her father's death through manning (taming) a hawk. It as much about the homosexual T.H. White who also wrote a book about his sorry goshawk. This is probably a five star book for most. I just could not get on the same wavelength as the author and couldn't feel most of what she was trying to convey. My loss, certainly.

I've always been fascinated by birds of prey. I was also an obsessive child, although my focus was horses. I know a great deal about coming to terms with loss. This book should have touched a nerve with every page, but it didn't. I couldn't help wondering what the point of writing it was. Beautiful prose, touching, and going nowhere.
