I liked this much better than I initially thought I would -- what started as Napoleonic-era-style warfare in a fantasy desert setting (interesting in its own right, but a little monotonous) developed into more of a fantasy as we discover the magic at work in this land, and we get to know Our Heroes a bit better.

I wish I had consulted goodreads before buying this book. I'm all for fantasy. However, I'm not a big fan of military fantasy. this book was very hard to get through. It was boring for me.

Wow, this book surpassed my expectations and took me on an incredible ride. So many characters, so much going on, this military fantasy is excellent.

The opening scene grips you immediately as you travel through the dark streets, witness a quick death, and show of magic. And Wexler doesn't stop with the action. There are some great lengthy reviews posted, check them out and then pick up the book. You'll not be sorry.

Winter was by far my favorite character. She, yes he turns out to be a she, sort of goes with the theme of things not being as they appear, finds herself thrust into a role of responsibility. Even though she'd rather keep to the shadows with her head down, she doesn't shirk from her duty and handles her men effectively.

I'm 100% here for Winter. She's one of the best characters I've come across lately, and I loved her story arc. I will definitely continue this series because of her.

The rest of the book didn't really grip me. I'm not sure if the military aspect of the book was too dominant (which wouldn't be the book's fault, since that's its genre) or if me and Marcus just didn't click. Sadly half the book is about Marcus, and I just couldn't bring myself to care about him or his arc.

The world building is clever and intricate, the magic system promising. I thought the first half of the book was quite slow, and I ended up finding the bad guys much more interesting than the good guys. I wish we could have seen more of the other side. Their magic is nifty!

Maybe in the next book?

Five stages of reading this book:

1. Who is who? What the hell is going on?
2. Well, that's nice. Give me more.
3. Too much of the same...
4. How much can they walk?
5. Finally, something promising!

I've enjoyed this book, though it wasn't as good as it could have been. With such a promising plot, the stretch and the repetitiveness in the description of the battles made for an unnecesserily long read before predictable, yet entertaining finale.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would seeing as the main narrative is focused on a military campaign with the main two POVs being told through officers' eyes. I really liked the main characters of Marcus and Winter and could feel for them as they faced ongoing challenges from the enemy and within the army itself. The fantastical elements and magic system were intriguing as they were slowly revealed and I would like to know more about how the world works. The main conflict has a resolution in this but there are still so many questions that need answering so I will definitely look up the next installment.
