Really interesting world and magic system. I got a bit confused as there are a lot of different sides to the conflicts. I liked the characters more as it went along and so now I am a bit more invested.
One of the protagonists is not typical of the genre and the magic is kept the background for most of the novel. There's a decent amount of focus on battle tactics. For the first two reasons, I'm giving this four stars.

Closer to 3.5. Interesting characters, neat world, fun idea, but I'm not sure I feel incredibly compelled to keep going in the series when #2 comes out. Nothing really grabbed me to be honest.
Packed with battles, it's a gritty fantasy that isn't normally my type, but I enjoyed it for it's solid execution.

Every time I picked this book up, it ate my head. I'd swear I was just going to read a couple pages while I had a snack, while I waited for a game to load, anything. Then I'd look up, too much time would have passed, and I wouldn't have accomplished whatever I intended to. I eventually gave up and finished the book so I could attempt to rejoin life as a functional human being.
Needless to say, I really liked it. Terrific battles, great mythos, fantastic characters, brisk and absorbing story. Now I'm going to have to read all the rest of them. So they, too, can eat my head. Dang it.
