General thoughts:
- JANUS <3 he could totally turn out to be a bastard, I'd still like him.
- Winter's storyline is great so far.
- Marcus is a disgustingly good person ---> he's stupid. I'll trade his POV for Janus' thank you, bye.
- This was a bit to...SLOOOOOOOOOOW for my tastes.

The world and its characters are compelling; the battle scenes bog down the entire rest of the book. It really doesn't hit its stride until the last 100 pages
I liked this flintlock military fantasy in the style of a Napolean campaign in Egypt, just with a different universe, a tiny bit of magic and lots of battle descriptions.
Although it was a real page turner, I found it too long - it is the start of a series, has a very long exposition, and doesn't achieve too much for the large amount of pages.
Characters filled standard tropes and there weren't many surprises w.r.t. character development.
Main topics were trust and loyalty on personal scale and in the military hierarchy. Wexler felt the need to fill in additional tropes like mutiny which I didn't quite believe with the given motivations.
In summary, it was a very nice and easy read without too much involvement in the brain department.

Oddly enough I enjoyed this more before the magic came into play but I'm nonetheless looking forward to finding out more about the world and the magic system.
Winter and Bobby are awesome.

Okay here's the thing with The Thousand Names, over two thirds of the book has barely any fantasy at all. It's mostly military strategy, which can be interesting up to a point, but then after pages and pages of it starts to become very dry. The last third of the book was pretty engaging though, I will say.
The characters are fleshed out, which is a super plus in my book, I was fascinated with them all. But the military strategy was at the forefront, and not even the characters could save that. I'm intrigued at where this is going, but I don't know that I enjoyed this enough to want to read it.

Three stars for the book itself, none for Jen, but one additional star because I love Janus.
What I noticed with this book is that it didn't take me too long to like the characters. Characters are an "end all be all" for me, and I need to like them for a book to be even remotely enjoyable. Sometimes I just never even warm up to any characters, so this was excellent.
I had trouble caring for the main storyline though. The action sequences were very long, half the time I was just confused, and other times I just wanted things to be over with. It also took me an embarassingly long time to learn the characters' full names. Why is this important exactly? In one character's POV people would be referred to by a different name (their first name, or family name) than in the other character's POV. I had to reread the summary just to double check sometimes.
My main points are just silly personal things I have trouble explaining, so it kind of comes across as if I didn't like it. But I did! And I especially liked Winter and Bobby! But I wouldn't say I liked it or them enough to be interested in checking out the sequels.
