based on the first book, I was not expecting what I got here. The INSANE twists and turns, a well fleshed out slow burn, never knowing what’s coming next; this turned out to be one of the best “fantasy” books I have ever read! I look forward to the third and final installment.

Thoughts while reading:
-Laurent is an idiot in taunting the mercenaries chasing them and giving their position away because he likes “the game.”

Ugh, so amazing! There were several times I wish Laurent gave Damen a head’s up and at the end, I wanted Damen to tell Laurent his identity, but oh, it’s so good.

And I totally think Laurent was a victim of his uncle in other ways - it would explain so much.

Read on Overdrive

Oh yes, even better than Volume One. Many times with trilogies or series, but especially with trilogies, the middle book reminds me of middle child syndrome. It can be seen as underwhelming, quiet or overshadowed by the books that brace it on either side or even worse, trying way too hard. Not trying to say this as disparagement to middle children (I am one), but I am speaking of how they sometimes view themselves and not necessarily how the outside world sees them. Rarely is a middle book rich in story arcs or character development, etc. because the characters were already developed or introduced in the first book and the climax doesn't come until the final book (usually). Anyway, all this rambling to say that this book is great by itself and is a great second book. With historical fiction, I am generally used to tomes, so a little short by my reckoning, but likely because I am chomping at the bit to read the next in the story line. Great characters, action, political intrigue, and sexual tension between Laurent and Damen. I am loving this read. Sidenote, S.U. Pacat is changing her author name to C.S. Pacat, a minor discrepancy, but a difference nonetheless so if you search under author names (like me), you may have trouble locating it.
