i quite liked this book i think the war campaign and strategy was really interesting and it was told in a cool way where fighting wasn’t the focus but the characters and their interactions. i really liked the slow burn that he learns to actually care for each other and the characters motivations develop so yeah def better than the first book and i’m hoping to see what the final one has to offer
Graphic: Physical abuse, Rape, Sexual violence, Violence
This book is shockingly healing in all its merciless glory.

Now that I have wiped the tears from my eyes and can form a proper sentence, let me just let everybody now that I AM A BROKEN WOMAN.
This book had me from line one, all the way to the end. I cried, I laughed (particularly with Laurent when he couldn't stop giggling on the rooftop), I screamed, I blushed. This was a rollercoaster and my god I wanted to be on it.
It's so refreshing and healthy and magnificent to have a relationship written between two characters like Laurent and Damon, and it's something that is completely lacking in a lot of fiction today, which sucks. Not even just the fact that they are two men, which adds a whole other beautifully progressive aspect to it. It's the fact that they AREN'T basing their relationship off the fact that they are two dudes, which you rarely get in a novel that involves any LGBTQ characters and are instead focused on each other, the way they slowly but surely fell in love. They are not defined by whom they choose to sleep with/love and lord almighty bless this book.
And let me just say, that scene where they made love, my heart was simultaneously breaking and cheering. There is such a way with words throughout both novels that captures the reader. I am so so so so happy that I chose to read these books. I am in dire need for the third one, especially after that ending.

So, a bit of history on why I read these books. About a year or so ago, I drove two hours each way to meet an author, an author I have become friends with as much as a reader could become friends with an author through love and support of their books. After this meeting/book signing deal; there was this talk about books in the parking lot for over an hour with she and I and another friend. Captive Prince was brought up and I was told how amazing the story was and how in your face it was. This author friend got in my face to emphasize the IN YOUR FACE of the story. Like nose to nose in your face and I was all, "Okay then."
Flash forward to a year later, I still had not read the books and said author friend was still um, insistent, so I read volume one. While I liked it, I admit to not loving it and felt like I would never be part of the cool kid group that adored this books. I thought, maybe I was too shallow to really get the whole deal. That was until I flipped through my Kindle App and decided to give volume two a shot and was sat on my ass nice and firmly.
It took me a bit to see the brilliance of this story, of both volumes and once I was about 36% into this one, I realized just how amazing volume one really was. It snuck up on me just like the emotions that were wrenched from me with this.
I am a mess. I stayed up until 12:30 am reading this, I don't stay up for just any story. I couldn't put this down. Not only was the UST with Damen and Laruent off the mother effing charts, this story was so intense, so layered and so fucking gorgeous that I coudln't stop reading. I hid under my blankets in bed so I wouldn't wake my husband as I sobbed and gasped at a few scenes.
You see, I was ready for the boys to connect but I wasn't prepared for the emotions to overwhelm me the way the did. The way that they are now as I write this and I try to keep it together and not weep at scenes that just tear my heart out. My poor strong and wickedly smart Laurent. What you have been through kills me. And Damen, can you get any hotter? I mean, really? Being inside your head was stellar, it was sexy and it was sadly heartbreaking when you realize what was happening.
OMG! This book. I GET IT NOW! I get it and I am so glad that I didn't give up and kept going because... how can you not read this and just have your mouth hanging open at the amazing talent of the author.
Sure, this is romance but the war, the battles, the imagery of the landscapes, the tents, the furs, the rooftops, the inns and the... JHFC. ALL OF IT. I am stunned and shocked and scandalized by this book. The secrets, and the lies the end. THE END! Really? Leaving me hanging like that with all the questions that I have. It's not nice to do that to a girl with OCD, ya know?
Oh but chapter 19½... *ahem* Can I get some audio of that? I was not expecting that after what we got in Chapter 19 but Laurent... and Damen and holy hot intimacy... yeah. That extra bit has one of my favorite things boys do together. Mmm Hmm.
So, my dear [a:C.J. Roberts|5174152|C.J. Roberts|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1315342144p2/5174152.jpg], you are vindicated and I have finally listened to you and did what you said. What was that again? Oh yeah ....
You told me to read it, and now I have so be prepared for my constant WTF's of the story and foaming at the mouth for book three. You have created a monster and I thank you for it.
