I AM UNWELL.

RTC.

January and February 2024 belated.

Intense MM dark romance in a medieval setting. Really enjoyed this, a slow burn enemies to lovers between two princes whose thrones have been usurped and lives are in danger. Damen had killed Laurent’s brother in battle years ago, and now Damen is at Laurent’s mercy as his slave and object of his revenge.

Political and social intrigue and strategy plays a huge role, and later military strategy and prowess, so it may be too plot heavy for someone seeking a fantasy romance, but I loved it. A trilogy with a set of sort stories as a side collection.
I liked it so much that while I borrowed the first ebook from the library, I couldn’t wait for my turn on the waitlist for the rest of the series and thought them ASAP to binge.

“Captive Prince” “Prince’s Gambit” “Kings Rising” and “The Summer Palace and Other Stories” by C.S. Pacat.

This was actually so much better than book 1. Like jaw on the floor in so many scenes.

sometimes i got incredibly confused about the geography of everything, but i still had a cool time!

the slow burn was spectacular and i marked almost every time damen even thought of laurent. it's quite wild how insane this pairing has left me. but it's great, really!

every time laurent did something impressive, i wanted to give a standing ovation. how is he so forward thinking; or, if not exactly that, then how is he just so politically minded. he's 20 fucking years old and yet he's got the scheming chops of some old and experienced king.
my mouth fell open and i got teary-eyed when it turned out that laurent had called on akielons to aid his men in their fight against the regent of vere, his uncle. the last few paragraphs when the akielons were chanting damen's name were fantastic. can't believe that's how it ended!

unironically this book is SO good - if you can stomach the first book this one is worth it 100 times over
