I really like the universe, cultures and mythology but the characters are too perfect and the rythme is strange. I'm glad I finished it though as the last third is nice.
I find this first book self sufficient so I'm not sure I'll read the rest.

This was really good. An interesting world with interesting magic, and a female main character who finds strength through her love for others.

Should have read the content warnings first (forced marriage & forced consummation)

Probably like a 3.5 - while I appreciate taking time to realistically portray a character and the slow burn romance the whole book could be cut by 1/3 to 1/2 just by trimming Mehr's excessive commentary (how often do we need to hear about how horrible the Maha is before we even see him do anything horrible?). I'm also still kind of confused about how the magic works and what happens in the end - isn't it more fun to establish the rules of the magic and watch the characters discover ways to work within the rules to free themselves rather than like...just kind of doing whatever they want in the end?

Really enjoyed this book and will likely head to the next in the series. Minus one star for all the cisheteronormativity. Otherwise, great world/character-building.
