Wow, this book. I loved it. The nostalgia and coming of age element was done really well, and had me tearing up at multiple points. This was the first of Carley Fortune’s books that I have read, and her writing was so engaging. It was one of those books that I truly had a hard time putting down and continued to think about through the day until I could pick it up again.
I so connected to both Percy and Sam’s perspectives growing up in their teenage years. The love, friendship, angst, tension, and hope between them really brought me back to my teenage years. Their individual desires to grow both inside their friendship/relationship and as individuals was so real. I connected to Sam’s fear of going to college and maybe not being smart enough as someone from a small town, and connected to Percy’s fear of being left behind by the people she most loves as they embark on new adventures and change without her.
The first 3/4ths of the book were so good. I was loving it, and loving the characters. But the ending felt not only out of character (for all of the characters, Percy especially), but not true to the story that had been told up until that point. I wish that something, anything, else had created conflict between Sam and Percy. Their relationship was so pure and beautiful, and they truly cared about one another as best friends. So I really felt that Percy sleeping with Sam’s brother Charlie was too far, and didn’t feel realistic at all based on everything about her character until it happened. I also didn’t feel like Charlie would do that to Sam. He was a flirt, but genuinely cared for Sam. Even though Percy and Sam were going through a tough time and maybe sort of on a break, I don’t think that cheating/sleeping with Charlie was in character for her at all. She just cared too much about Sam for that to make any sense. Like she hadn’t even slept with Sam at that point? Are we to take it that she lost her virginity to Charlie? If so, her going through with it should have been a bigger deal for a multitude of reasons.
The tension leading up to the big reveal of Percy sleeping with Charlie gutted me. I could kind of tell that it was coming based on the foreshadowing, but when it finally happened, I was not ready.
The ending felt a bit rushed. After so much time focused on the past, and then only a quick weekend reconciling, I wanted more of Sam and Percy once they got back together for real. The epilogue hinted at what their life together was like, but I wanted MORE. I truly don’t think that they could have realistically resolved everything and decided to get back together after over a decade of not speaking in the span of a weekend. I understand forgiveness, but for things to be seemingly perfect after one conversation felt a bit unrealistic and rushed. I would have loved to see more on that.
I also would have loved to have some of the book from Sam’s perspective - especially the present day.
I loved how flawed both characters were. They felt real. This was refreshing. The writing was amazing and incredibly immersive, and I cannot stop thinking about this book and these characters. I just wish that the end had felt a little bit more true to the characters, and hadn’t been as extreme as it was. Despite that, this was an incredibly enjoyable read that hit me in all of the feels. It gutted me in ways I didn’t expect, and I really appreciated how different it felt from so many other romance novels with a happily ever after. This book had me laughing, crying, frustrated, and feeling so nostalgic. I can’t wait to read more of Carly Fortune’s work in the future.

I loved this book! It reminded me of the summer I turned pretty in many ways, but also love in other words. I love the friends to lovers trope and couldn’t put it down. Great summer read!!
