Must Love Silence

Lucy Bexley

3.5 AVERAGE

2 1/2 stars. Short and cute, but the forced "3/4 of the way through the book contractually obligated drama" really irked me. It felt like an overreaction for the characters, who at that point had barely even had an "are we actually dating" talk, but were arguing like it was a life-and-death situation over something fairly minor. The way it got wrapped up didn't feel totally natural to me, either.

I didn't really care for most of the side characters, which never usually happens. Judith in particular made me actively annoyed. I'm also SO TIRED of characters telling the (usually female) main character that the boundaries they try to establish are actually stupid and don't matter, because this person stomping all over those boundaries actually means well and that's all that matters. I think Judith was supposed to be kind of comic relief, but it always missed the mark and just irritated me instead.

Most of the problems I had with the book I think were just because of its length. If there was more time allowed to develop Arden and Reese individually, I think I would've cared more about them getting together.

2 stars at a PUSH. by the 80% mark my eyes were rolling so far back in my head i thought i was gonna lose them.

some books are emotional rollercoasters but this one was a very bland, non-exciting straight line. despite a few well-written passages that within another story might have been more convincing, this book failed to take off. it severely lacked drama and depth. and it's not that i need a romance to have a complex plot for me to enjoy it, but i do need to be convinced that the characters feel for each other what the text says they do. if you introduce character a and character b and say they have sexual tension but do nothing to PROVE it... i cannot have this discussion again. i can't i can't.

at the end of the day it just all felt very superficial, and the entire time reading it i was thinking "if this was a fanfic [i.e. an au romance between 2 characters i already know and love] would i enjoy it more?". and honestly, i don't know if i would have.

also for a "lesbian romance" i found it funny* that neither character ever once referred to themselves as a lesbian.

*not funny haha, funny weird.

Kind of wanted 2021 to go out on a bang, so.
Also Judes Supremacy!

I was on the lookout for spicy romance and someone recommended this. The first two lines of the blurb caught my attention and I instantly bought it.

I have learned that when someone says something is spicy, I need to ask them to rate it on a scale of banana peppers to ghost reaper peppers.  This was maybe a step above banana. Not bad at all, but I was expecting something closer to the reaper side of things.

Overall a decent read, just not what I was hoping for.
