So, so incredibly hard to get into this book. I think the story started for me around page 250.
In the beginning, I had to force myself to read it, but believe me, it gets better.
At the end I was like "Amazing story!" But in the beginning it was boring.
I was never into the 'Melanie-Jared'-story but I think I was falling in love with Ian myself! :D
Love this book!

I wasn’t hooked on the premise. The book was cringe (given, it was published in 2008). And to top it all off
THE AGE GAP OF SEVENTEEN AND TWENTY-SIX
was so ick!!

I loved this book. The idea of the Souls, caring and kind, taking over a world because they thought that they could make it better. The idea of them erasing human minds and not caring was amazing, but then you discver that they were sickened by our violence and didn't realise that what they were doing was wrong.
Then the secret that Wanda kept of Melanie's presence and the repulsive Seeker made the book a gripping an beautiful read. The scene where Wanda realises her love for Ian, which goes deeper then the protest of Melanie's body, is moving nd beautiful. I truly enjoyed this book.

I really resisted reading this book because, well, Twilight. I was definitely not expecting to be pulled into the story.

Unexpectedly enjoyable. A fun science-fiction story with liberal doses of romance. Or should I say a nice fun romance story with sci-fi themes interwoven? There's not enough sci-fi elements to justify this is a legitimate sci-fi book. Most of the fascinating sci-fi themes in this book are treated very superficially and there's not much in-depth look at these aspects of the story.

A rather melodramatic finale, but you know what? It worked for me. I was rooting for Wanderer from the moment she entered the desert.

Setting aside my initial bias due to my dislike of Twilight, this story isn't too bad. Just enjoy the book as a lighthearted romantic romp into sci-fi land.

It was...okay. I don't like how Stephenie Meyer drags her books out so much. The plot is so diluted that I kept reading to make the time I already gave to the book not an entire waste...ugh. And why are her protagonists always stupid girls who every so often do something really brave that makes everyone fall in love with them?!

The first thing I really noticed about this book was how the Souls reminded me of the Goa'uld from my absolute favorite show, Stargate. They're "worms" that attach to the back of the head that take over the host's body, and they claim that nothing of the host survive. The only way to tell that someone has a symbiote is that the eye's glow. Wanda was more like the Tok'ra who share their body with the host, but she can't go back and forth between the host and symbiote. The Goa'uld can reproduce by a Queen which is one who produces offspring that have a genetic memory. The Tok'ra come from one Queen who realized the rest of the Goa'uld were evil and gave her children the same ideals, and the Tok'ra fight against the Goa'uld. Like the mother of all the Tok'ra, Wanda could be the mother of a new generation of Souls that only take hosts that volunteer.

As for the rest of the story...I really liked Wanda and Mel, though at times I thought I didn't hear as much from Mel as I would have liked. Sometimes it seemed like I didn't get to know her as well as I should have considering she was always in Wanda's head and the whole book was basically internal dialogue. I also didn't get a sense of impending doom during the story. I never got that sense of the survivors precarious situation, and that at any time they could be discovered. They always seemed too safe. I suspect (or hope) that the next book will have more heavy conflict, though sequels usually do. Speaking of sequels, I look forward to the next one and Wanda's relationships with Ian and Mel, and finding other human survivors and Souls like her. I hope it starts out right where the last one ended.

As an aside; to me this read like a YA novel not an adult one. I can't understand why it was marketed like one, unless Stephanie Meyer was trying to attract a larger audience. Doesn't matter much to me, a good book is a good book.
