Well. I have conflicting emotions about this book... First, my perspective is slightly warped based on the fact that I saw the movie before reading the book. I do not make it a habit of seeing a movie prier to reading the book, but I was about 12th on the hold list at my library when the movie came out and I was just too eager to wait.
The movie didn't quite live up to my expectations but it was still good. I was really drawn into the trailer to the movie which is how I found the book in the first place. Plus, the song Radioactive by Imagine Dragons that is featured in The Host's trailers is really good. I felt it was a very good match. But the actual movie didn't really explain to me what was going on and it dragged a bit in the middle. This only made me want to read the book that much more so I could fully understand what was happening and reasons for certain things and so on. This is why I prefer reading the book first.
However, the dragging that went on in the movie was only amplified in the book. I would say that there was nothing going on in this book for about 3/4 of the 600 and some odd pages. This was extremely disappointing to me. Plus, the book was boring to me in some parts because I had already seen the movie and was anticipating what was happening. My fault for seeing the movie first, but still.
I think the book actually became interesting around page 475ish. The end of the story was great. I will give it that. But without the interesting last 150 pages or so, this book would definitely be in the 1-2 star range. I feel generous by giving it that third star. When I picked it up from the library, I literally gasped at the sheer magnitude of the book. It is a big book. A big book with no action which equals a non-substantial read.
I suppose my still unanswered questions will be addressed in the sequels. Like how a parasite that requires surgical insertion can even have come to exist in the first place. Those little things that Wanderer kinda touches on put doesn't fully explain.
I certainly had higher hopes for this book and was left sorely disappointed with the lack of depth and false suspension. Radioactive was probably the ultimate attention winner. So kuddos to whoever made the trailers because that's what drew me in. Other than that, the actual story was average which is why it's earned those three stars.

A proper trip down memory lane. At the start I was so scared it wouldn’t be as good as I remembered it but ALL of the emotions came flooding back.

I enjoyed this book way more then I expected to!
This was my first Stephanie Meyer book, and I always heard a lot of hate about her books from people at school and that sort of stuff, so I went into this book not expecting too much. I wanted to read a book by her myself to know how it would be. The book I chose was obviously The Host (since this is a review for The Host), and it was a great choice!!! Stupid haters, I thought this book was awesome :D.
When I started reading this book I was just intrigued. The whole concept is super interesting and I enjoyed reading about Wanderer/Wanda taking possession of Melanie's mind in the beginning so much. Everything about the first part of the book I loved. Wanda and Melanie, to minds in one body and then going off to search. I love our main character Wanda. Also I love the whole alien-concept and all the worlds with life.
Later in the story there was a short moment were I felt that Melanie was a bit underdeveloped as a character, but that feeling didn't stay very long. I ended up really liking her too. Also I loved to read the bonus chapter from Melanie's point of view. She is cool!
The blurb on the back of the book was talking about one of the most unusual love triangles in literature. I disagree, triangle is not the right term. There are four people involved, not three. And it wasn't bothering me, like normally I don't enjoy things such as love triangles, but this was not like that. It wasn't even a real triangle to begin with, so yeah. I was however glad that this occurred later in the story when I was already enjoying the story and liking the main characters. It did at some fun and complicated feelings. ^^
I also enjoyed the ending of the story, well not like the cliffhanger ending at the end end (if you know what I mean), but how the main plot ended. That was satisfying. The cliffhangery-ending tho, I'm not sure how I feel about that just yet.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading the Host. A nice surprise actually. Don't let haters influence you. I loved the world/universe-building. The characters were great and I highly enjoyed the story. 4 out of 5 stars!

i loved it so much!! - Ian and Wanda <3
I was surprised to really like this book. I thought that it was a fascinating idea and she played it out well. Totally different than the Twilight series, except for the angst and longing in her love relationships.
I LOVED this book. This is saying a lot because I normally really dislike or at least am unimpressed by the new dystopia novels. Plus, Stefenie Meyer is definitely not my favorite author. I found her writing and the plot interesting but a little shallow, and I didn't really enjoy the style all that much.
In this book, I found the style improved, and the pot deep and unexpected. I loved the way that the characters developed, and the ending really was stunning. It is a bit mature, but mostly very tasteful. I was absolutely swept away, and I couldn't put it down for several days until I finished it. It is a little bit long, but I tore threw it in a few days because I enjoyed it so much.
I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of dystopia, Twilight, and modern literature in general. A great read.
