This is such a wonderful book. Honestly, a million miles better than Twilight. I've read all of the Twilight books, and while I enjoyed them at the time due to the plot I have to admit that the writing isn't great. But this? This book is amazing. It's such a beautiful story, the protagonists aren't useless and dull, the love triangle is far more complex and raises some interesting philisophical questions...I love it. Once more, the sci-fi elements are just as developed as the love story part of it, something I wasn't expecting from Meyer. The descriptions of the various aliens are detailed and really unique, adding realism and depth to the story. The invasion itself is believable, and again the whole issue of the souls vs the humans creates an interesting philisophical debate. The Host also made me cry a grand total of four times, and believe me when I say I'm not the type of person who cries at anything. I can only remember one book and one TV show episode which has made me cry, so it goes to show how this book sucks you in. The only part I wasn't happy with was the epilogue. It felt lacking to me, though I'm not sure why. On the whole though, a thoroughly deserved 5 stars from me. Read it and read it now, or else you're just missing out
Additional note: Having read some of the other reviews, I feel the need to argue against the idea that the protagonist is weak. Yes, Wanda herself is generally not a strong person but she was never meant to be. The reason she is so complacent is

because she identifies so strongly with Melanie, she feels guilty for even being there. She's not going to stick up for herself when she doesn't even believe that she deserves to be there. I would also like to point out that this book corrects one of the main flaws of Twilight (in my opinion at least) Wanda's relationship with Jared is the more passionate one, and yet she knows she'll never be happy with him. She makes the far healthier choice in the end by going for Ian, and unlike Bella in Twilight Wanda is not completely driven by hormones but instead genuine affection and trust.Spoiler
Back to the strong character point, there is no arguing that Mel is definitely strong and she could be seen as the protagonist almost as much as Wanda. I don't think that these arguments specifically are justified

This is one of my favorite books and I’ve reread it numerous times from when I was a teenager to an adult, it still continues to be a favorite. Rereading it brings to light the inner conflict and questions of human nature and ideals.
Moderate: Cancer, Violence, Medical content, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Suicide, Kidnapping, Grief
Excessively long story about two consciences inside a body that travel to save this one person.
