This book was hard to read, yet I couldn't put it down. I read a lot of reviews that struggled with the jumping from present tense to the past, from one line to the next. But I think that was intentional and I didn't have a hard time following the story. This book isn't so much about Lex's escape. It is about what happened leading up to it, and more so, what came after. It's about how abuse and trauma will stay with people for the rest of their lives, but it will manifest differently for each person. Lex so easily slipping from present to the past is a glimpse at how anything in the present can instantly trigger a memory that puts us right back into the past. How do you move forward after something like that? I don't think this book gives any answers to that question, but it's a courageous and gripping glimpse into the journey.
dark and gripping, intense, haunting but also powerful. this book had me on edge from the very start. i just couldn’t put it down. beautifully written, with moments that brought tears to my eyes and revelations that made my heart ache. one of my favorite reads of 2022!

An unforseen ending. Its hard for a book to make me emotional but the ending of this one did.

the twist was predictable, there was limited connection to any of the characters (too many left unestablished) and it went on for 200 pages too long but the parts i did enjoy i enjoyed a lot which is why it's not 2 stars
Heartbreaking. Reminded me of Educated and the road that her life could have taken but thankfully did not.
