I was originally going to give this book a two-star review because it started so slowly but in the last 100 pages, the pace really picks up and the dynamics of the Gracie family become even more intricate. This book had some very clear but cleverly written links to the Turpin family case but it was written in a way that was tasteful. I think at times there was just too much unnecessary detail. I wanted to know more about the events at Moor Woods road as opposed to the legalities of restoring the family home. Although, the insight into the ‘present day’ dynamics were still interesting.

Fooled by the blurb. Thought I was getting a crime/thriller, instead got vague info dump on the lives of 6 people both during and after a horrific thing happening to them. That's it, no storyline, just info about each person with the timeline switching between during the event and 15yrs later CONSTANTLY.
The chapters are HUGE, 330 page book, only 7 chapters. I hate Big chapters

Girl A has been on my shelf for a while. My husband read it and liked it, but I had been putting off reading it because of some of the reviews I'd read. I need to stop being so influenced by other peoples thoughts and see for myself. I thought Girl A was good.
I wouldn't describe this book as a thriller. But the way it is marketed, I think a lot of people go into the book expecting that and therefore are disappointed. Whilst Girl A is a fiction book, Abigail Dean drew inspiration from real-life cases such as the Turpin family. If you like true-crime stories, I would recommend you read this.
It is about Lex Gracie, known as Girl A. She is one of 7 siblings who was held captive by their parents in the 'House of Horrors'. There are 7 chapters in the book, which generally covers a sibling per chapter but from Girl A's perspective. The story alternates between the past and the present, so we learn what happened throughout their childhood and what happened once they escaped.
The only thing I didn't like was the long chapters. Personally, I much prefer books with shorter chapters. However, as I read this on holiday, I had the time to read it quickly so it didn't annoy me as much as it would have done normally.

Girl A is beautifully written, and at times tragic. It starts a little slow but once you get into what's going on, it gets really good. Abigail Dean has a way of expressing tragedy in a way that really draws you in to the characters. Looking forward to reading her other books.
