2.5 stars. The historical part was interesting but the characters were hardly developed at all (very one dimensional) and the prose was painfully stilted at times. Hence the rating.
3 plus....the history was interesting....but some of the characters in the audiobook felt kind of one dimensional

It was so good. It starts a little slow but OMG when u get into it. AHHHHHH. The emotion the author was able to convey was incredible and the storyteller chefs kiss. I lived for Grace and Rafael’s romance and loved how this story was about empowering women and how they shaped their own lives. Ahhhhhh it was just soooooo good.

This is the fourth Chanel Cleeton book that I've read and I've enjoyed every single one of them.
Out of the four books within the Cuba series, this one was probably my least favorite but I still enjoyed reading it! This one took a bit longer to get into the action for me and I just didn't feel the connection that I felt in previous Cleeton books. However, everything that I turn to Cleeton's books for - some Cuban history, strong female characters, dual timelines - was present in this one. I wish I knew at the beginning that Evangelina was based on a real person; I found that fascinating at the end.
This book can definitely stand alone within the Perez family novels, but I was happy to read it as part of their overall story. And the family tree in the back was very helpful! This showed me unique part of Cuba's history and a unique perspective on the rise of newspapers in the Gilded age. A fun read!

These three woman, Grace, Evangelina, and Marina, lived such different lives. To see how their lives that are so completely different intertwine so much that they played such significant rolls in each others lives was exciting to read. Chanel does a great job with that. Not only does she knows how to give us different POVs in a storyline that are hold our attention, she also knows how to make them all so interesting that you fall in love with all the characters. You want to know what is happening with the other characters, but you are also happy to get back to another’s path and find out what happened to them. It all is just marvelous.
All is fair in love and war, right? These women were incredibly brave. Wether it was to break out of social norms to make their own path in life, or to stand up for something they believed in with their whole heart. They knew what they wanted in life and did what was necessary to get themselves there. Yes bad things happened. Being imprisoned, whether it was justified or not, and still maintaining the moxie to to keep fighting as these women did is inspiring.
The one slight downfall was Grace. Yay for her wanting to be independent. She wanted something besides being a wife just because that was all women were supposed to do in that time period. Unfortunately, she had to live that dream according to men in power. Baby steps I guess.
Do you like your multiple POVs to be of those in a relationship or are you okay with the different POVs to be platonic characters in the story?
