For the Cuba prompt in my bookclub’s Summer Passport Challenge, I chose The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, the fourth in The Perez Family series.
This one features three strong protagonists (two revolutionaries and a journalist) during the Cuban War of independence from Spain. I learned more about the Cuban War from this book than I ever learned in school. It was both fascinating and shocking.
There was also a subplot about “yellow journalism” and the NYC “newspaper wars” between rival publishers William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. As a big fan of journalism, I loved this storyline!
The interweaving of the three stories is classic Cleeton! Bravo! I really recommend this one!

This book is about what led up to the Spanish American war in the late 1800s. It centers on 3 women, all facing different issues and all fighting with dignity. Their stories are woven together seamlessly and the chapters are told from their various viewpoints in a way that propels the novel forward in chronological order. I am a huge fan of this series from Chanel Cleeton and highly recommend if you are a historical fiction reader, and even if you're not.

I enjoyed this book set during the Gilded Age in New York and Cuba. Interesting to learn about the Spanish American War, the fight for Cuba’s independence, and the newspaper war between Pulitzer and Hearst. Strong, independent women characters.

Really was interested in the time period and setting of this historical fiction—Cuban war for independence/Spanish-American war/journalism at the time, but as a novel I think was just okay. The writing or just the way the story was told felt stilted and the characters' motivations or the points/themes were repeated A LOT. The plotlines really followed the actual history, which made it feel accurate but maybe not that surprising?
