Too much inner monologue, navel gazing and “woe is me” for my taste. Needed better editing.

I was overdue for a good historical fiction book and I know Cleeton’s Perez family books will hit the spot. The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba did not disappoint.
The story takes place during the Cuban War of Independence from Spain in the late 19th century. Reading this book felt timely as I easily draw comparisons to the current world events taking place in Palestine. Uncanny how history repeats itself over and over again.
Cleeton weaves together the stories of 3 women while giving us a history lesson on a part of Cuba’s history that is not often talked about. This is the fourth book in the Perez family series and I continue to love them.

For a historical fiction this story was pretty accurate. I loved how informative it was and how even though it is about Cuba, the setting alternative between Cuba and NYC in the late 1800 and early 1900’s. Very descriptive with strong character development. The book does fall apart at the end. The characters face some pretty big challenges (war, political imprisonment, asylum, spy’s) yet everyone has the happiest of endings. “When you control the news and regulate speech in a country you can shape reality however you see fit.”
This novel, incorporating real-life figures from Cuba's fight for independence from Spain, is a big, melodramatic mess. The actions and words of the characters were so over-the-top that it was difficult to read without laughing out loud. I was really disappointed, because the actual history of this period in Cuba, and the women who made it, is a thrilling story and was hoping for a more realistic story crafted around their lives.
