It was good, but.....
The author"told" what happened rather than "showed" which makes for less interesting reading.

I love the connection to her previous novels. I’ve read some of the other reviews, and I agree that this novel was very revealing with Cuban/American history. Taking place in the late 19th century, this story follows three women: Grace, Evangelina, and Marina. Grace is a journalist with Hearsts’ Journal, Evangelina is the unwitting face of the Cuban conflict with Spain, and Marina is secretly working with the Cuban revolution as a courier. Marina is my favorite. Evangelina is a real person, so I was very interested in finding out more about her. American interest in the conflict was brought forth when Hearst published a story about her imprisonment, “The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba”. He then pushed hard and aided in her escape; although, it was prompted by the rivalry and determination to outdo Pulitzer at the time. When We Left Cuba and The Last Train to Key West are, in my opinion, the best out of these four connected novels. Book challenge 2022: a book set in the 1800s.

Chanel Cleeton has a way of taking a subject I'm barely interested in and captivating me. Her writing and storytelling are both incredible, and she always paints the most vivid scenes, to the point that I feel like I've actually been to Cuba thanks to her books. I'm to the point where I'll read anything by her, with or without reading the summary, because I know she'll make it a good story.
