4.5 stars. Another good one in her Cuba line up. I was so very happy to see Mateo safe with his family and Grace and Rafael end up together.

A fictionalized account about Evangeline Cisneros' story of injustice during the Cuban revolution, and Randolph Hearst's crazy ploy to bust her out of jail and subsequent absurd coverage of the revolution; but told in a dry, nondescriptive style.
I didn’t realize this was part of a series before I started reading it, but I don’t think I really missed out on anything by not reading the first three books. This was a solid historical fiction read. I just didn’t like the romance aspects in two of the main female characters stories. They felt very forced and not natural.

The first 3 books were so good, this was disappointing. It was a real slog to read and the characters were really flat. Kept reading, because I thought it would get better. It didn’t.
Chanel Cleeton is a historical fiction mastermind. When I read her books set in Cuba I learn so much, and dream of reading books set in all of the countries of the world which bring their history to life. I had waited and waited for my library to own this on audiobook and honestly Waited too long, so when at Fabled Books recently I had to purchase it. This story is set in the Gilded Age, which I happened to be watching at the same time which brought it more to life. The story is told through the eyes of three amazing women: Evangelina Cisneros who was a young woman who fought for Cuban independence from Spain, Grace who was a journalist, and Marina a wealthy young woman giving up her wealth for love to fight for Cuba. Highly recommend
