I was entertained by this book don’t let the 3 star rating fool you. We follow three women in the late 1890s try and make their ways in a world that doesn’t offer much to women. 2 women are grappling with the Spanish occupation of Cuba while one is trying to become the next Nellie Blye.

Listened to the audiobook for book club. Not my favorite of the 4 we have read but that could be because I listened to it.

This book was really good. I loved the story being told from three womens POV from different aspects of the war.

This historical fiction takes place in the late 1800s during part of the Cuban War for Independence and the Spanish-American war. The story is told from the perspective of three women, Evangelina Cisneros, Marina Perez, and Grace Harrington. My favorite character was Grace. She works as a reporter for the New York Journal, a paper belonging to the famous Randolph Hearst. She wants to be taken seriously as a reporter and finds herself covering the story of Evangelina Cisneros, a women who has been unjustly imprisoned in Cuba. Grace is driven, witty, and completely sure of herself.

I love how the author mixed real life events and people with fictitious characters. I learned a lot about the Spanish-American war, which was very interesting. I found the questions posed by this book about the purpose of the free press very relevant to today’s world. A great read.

Cleeton has a wonderful way of blending historical events with her beautiful characters. I love reading a new historical novel from her, because I know I'm not only going to get a good story, but I'm going to learn something as well. This wasn't my favorite from her, but I still enjoyed it.

4.5 stars. Definitely her best book so far.

I enjoyed the storyline and characters in this book. I feel like a learn a lot about Cuban history from this series; no idea if any of it (or what) is accurate. The journalist storyline reminded me of Newsies, which was fun.

Being a Cuban-American daughter/granddaughter of Cuban immigrants I just want to soak up all the stories about Cuba. I was first introduced to Ms. Cleeton with Next Year In Havana and her words will forever live in my heart.
I do not read historical romances but Chanel Cleeton really has me loving this genre. Her words will transport you to this time period and will leave you clutching your book/kindle. I can not recommend Ms. Cleeton more. She is an absolute must read for me!!!
