This is a powerful and moving story of a family struggling to survive. It weaves Hawaiian myths and legends together with a little magical realism as it tells the story of Nainoa Flores and his family. The chapters alternate among the family members – Noa, the special middle child who has miraculous healing abilities; Dean, the eldest, an elite athlete who struggles to find his place in his family and the world at large; Kaui, the smart but neglected daughter who also struggles to find her place; as well as narration from their mother. An excellent debut about family, tragedy, legend, and fate.

what an engaging read full of beauty, magic, and family. would read 100 times again. i was absolutely captured by kawai strong washburn’s story telling and his character development.
