First off, I am very proud to see the Hawaiian representation. Sharks In The Time of Saviors is such an incredible story full of Hawaiian legend, grief, complicated family dynamics, losing your path but finding your way home again. This is definitely one I will be coming back to when I need a piece of Hawaii in my life.
Now can I go back home, pls?

This is primarily a coming of age story centered on three siblings: Nainoa (the chosen one), Dean, and Kaui.
I enjoyed the magical realism woven into this story.
The POV flips between the three siblings and the parents. Even though it’s first-person POV, each of the voices were unique, which was really impressive.

Probably 4.5 stars. There were parts of the story that I didn't enjoy - he gets too biological for me - but the writing felt vivid and compelling. And I loved following the stories of the three siblings and the dynamics between them. I would happily read more by this author.

Like many ambitious novels, this was not an easy read - both in terms of its themes (poverty, fractured family dynamics, the native Hawaiian experience, general twentysomething whining) and style. At times the writing is poetic to the point of incoherence, at others it tries so hard to replicate character voice it feels awkwardly forced. But somewhere between those two there are parts that flow beautifully - the sense of place in particular is transportative and I believed people emerging from the unremittingly bleak world created would cope as selfishly and treat each other as badly as those depicted.
